Essaouirans are fairly laid back about western dress and there are no laws regulating the dress code.
Any woman who wears revealing clothing may attract the attention of men, and will most likely be subject to whistles and remarks. After a while they can become very tiresome and not worth the hassle; it is easier to cover up when you are in the Medina.
We suggest to our our female guests that covering upper arms in t-shirts or a wrap and wearing 3/4 length trousers rather than shorts will help you enjoy your shopping experience when you are in the Medina.
If a man goes out in public wearing anything that may be perceived as underwear he will be met with good spirited grins. If he walks around with a bare chest, this will be less appreciated and potentially will be considered offensive unless of course you are on the beach or at the swimming pool.
On the beach bikinis and costumes are commonplace.
Essaouira is known as "The Windy City" and at any time of year the wind can pick up so we advise our guests to find space in their luggage for a light weight sweater or wrap.
In the cooler months sudden showers can take you by suprise and a light weight kagool is advisable.
